Scripture for reflection:

  1. God created humanity perfect.
    1. Genesis 1:26 (ESV) 26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
    2. Genesis 6:9 (ESV) These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.
    3. Job 1:1 (ESV) There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil.
  2. Humanity exercised its freedom to rebel and reject the relationship with God.
    1. Romans 1:21–22 (ESV) 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
    2. Romans 3:23 (ESV) 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
    3. Proverbs 12:20 (ESV) 20 Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan peace have joy.
    4. Ecclesiastes 9:3 (ESV)This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that the same event happens to all. Also, the hearts of the children of man are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
    5. Mark 7:21–23 (ESV) 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
  3. God in love acted to redeem, restore and
    1. John 3:16 (ESV) 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
    2. James 1:4 (ESV) And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
    3. Psalm 26:2 (ESV) Prove me, O Lord, and try me; test my heart and my mind.
    4. Philippians 3:12–15 (ESV) 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.
    5. Jeremiah 12:3 (ESV) But you, O Lord, know me; you see me, and test my heart toward you. Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and set them apart for the day of slaughter.
    6. 2 Corinthians 5:17–18 (ESV)17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;
    7. Psalm 69:5 (ESV) O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.
